Hypothesis

If diffusion and osmosis is real then when we put and exposed egg in a hypotonic solution it should grow because and when we put an egg in a hypertonic solution it should shrink, this happens because molecules pass through the cell membrane of the eggs. It will increase or decrease because molecules will pass from high concentration to a low concentration.

Materials

  • 4 eggs
  • corn syrup
  • table salt
  • water
  • vinegar

Procedure

  1. Place eggs in vinegar for 3 days, when you take them out the shell should be removed (figure one).
  2. Have three containers one with corn syrup the second one with water and the third with salt water.
  3. Weigh each egg before you put one in each solutions.
  4. Put one egg in the corn syrup the second in water and the last in salt water (figure two)
  5. We left them in the solution over night.
  6. Take each egg out and weight them.
  7. We put the egg that was in the salt water in the corn syrup and the egg that was in the corn syrup in water.
  8. We left the eggs in the solution for three hours
  9. After we weighted them
  10. Then we observed there changes and why they changed

Observations

The eggs removed from the vinegar have no shell (figure one). They have a mass of around 89g, 90g and 97g , they appear larger than a regular egg which has a mass of around 65g. Egg one started with a mass of 89g then we put it in corn syrup and it dropped to a mass of of 39g then we put it in water and it grew to 86g. Egg 2 started with a mass of 90g and then we put it in water and it grew to a mass of 94g then we put it in salt water and it stayed at a massof 94g. Egg three started with a mass of 97g then we put it in salt water and it went up one gram to 98g the we put it in corn syrup and it shrunk to a mass of 74g.

Conclusion

We conclude that diffusion and osmosis is real. I know this because when we put an 89g egg in a hypertonic solution (corn syrup) it decreased by 50g because the egg had a higher concentration than the corn syrup, diffusion took some of the water from the egg and put it in the corn syrup to even out the concentration. When we put a 90g egg in a hypotonic solution (water) it increased in size by 4g, that happened because of osmosis because the cell membrane let the water into the egg,

Relevance

We are alive because of osmosis because if water did not go in and out of the cells the cells would dry out and also it lets nutrients in to our bodies.
